Base Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Cheese Mixture
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Seasonings and Garnish
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or parsley, chopped
- Sauté the Mushrooms: Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced mushrooms and cook for 8-10 minutes until they become browned and tender. Add minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
- Incorporate Cream Cheese and Sour Cream: Lower the heat to low. Add the softened cream cheese and sour cream to the skillet, stirring continuously until both are melted and fully combined with the mushroom mixture to create a smooth base.
- Add Cheeses and Season: Stir in half of the shredded mozzarella and all of the grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well until the dip is creamy and well blended. Season the mixture with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Bake the Dip: Sprinkle the remaining shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on top of the dip. Transfer the skillet to a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the dip is bubbly and has a golden crust on top.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and garnish the dip with freshly chopped thyme or parsley. Serve the dip hot alongside bread, crackers, or vegetable sticks for dipping.
Notes
- Use a cast-iron or oven-safe skillet to bake the dip directly after sautéing.
- For a richer flavor, use butter instead of olive oil when sautéing mushrooms.
- The dip can be prepared a day ahead and baked just before serving.
- Feel free to substitute mozzarella with other melting cheeses like Monterey Jack or fontina for variation.
- Serve warm to enjoy the creamy texture and melted cheese at its best.
