Perfect for a comforting low-carb meal, it replicates the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak in an easy-to-make baked casserole form.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat & Vegetables

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 fat ratio preferred)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 large bell peppers (green, red, or mixed), diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy & Cheese

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 8 oz provolone cheese, sliced
  • 1.5 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Condiments & Seasonings

  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onions and bell peppers, cooking for 5-6 minutes until softened and fragrant. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, stirring constantly to avoid burning the garlic.
  3. Cook Ground Beef: Add ground beef to the skillet and break it up with a spatula as it cooks. Season generously with salt and pepper. Continue cooking for 7-8 minutes until the beef is fully browned and no pink remains. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  4. Add Flavor and Cream Cheese: Stir Worcestershire sauce into the meat mixture, coating it evenly. Reduce heat to low and add softened cream cheese, stirring until it melts completely and the mixture becomes creamy.
  5. Assemble Casserole: Transfer the creamy beef mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly. Layer torn provolone cheese pieces over the meat, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top for a cheesy crust.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 22-25 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden on top.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove from oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld before serving.

Notes

  • Using cream cheese softened to room temperature ensures it melts smoothly into the beef mixture.
  • You can adjust the bell pepper colors based on your preferences or what you have available.
  • Drain excess fat from the cooked beef to keep the dish from being too greasy.
  • Letting the casserole rest after baking helps enhance the flavor and makes serving easier.
  • For a spicier twist, consider adding some sliced jalapeños or red pepper flakes during the sauté step.
