4.7 from 100 reviews

A quick and delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak using ground beef, sautéed vegetables, and melted provolone cheese stuffed into hoagie rolls. Perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or game day treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Cheese

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or any cheese of your preference)

Vegetables

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Seasonings and Condiments

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Breads and Oil

  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • Olive oil, for cooking

Instructions

  1. Heat the Pan: In a large skillet, add a drizzle of olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until hot and shimmering.
  2. Cook Vegetables: Add the sliced onions and green bell peppers to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-5 minutes until they are tender and slightly caramelized. If using mushrooms, add them now and cook for an additional 3 minutes until softened.
  3. Brown the Beef: Push the cooked vegetables to one side of the skillet. Add the ground beef to the empty side. Break the beef apart with a spatula and cook until it is fully browned with no pink remaining, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Season: Stir the vegetables and beef together. Add garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly and cook together for another 2 minutes to blend flavors.
  5. Melt the Cheese: Reduce the heat to low. Place slices of provolone cheese evenly over the beef and vegetable mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow the cheese to melt, approximately 2-3 minutes.
  6. Prepare the Rolls: While the cheese is melting, slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise, being careful not to cut completely through to keep a hinge.
  7. Assemble the Sandwiches: Once the cheese has melted, spoon the cheesy beef and vegetable mixture generously into each hoagie roll, distributing evenly.
  8. Serve Hot: Optionally, toast the assembled sandwiches briefly in a skillet or oven to add crunch and warmth. Serve immediately for the best taste.

Notes

  • For a more authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor, consider using thinly sliced ribeye instead of ground beef.
  • Adding mushrooms is optional, but they add lovely earthiness and umami.
  • Worcestershire sauce significantly enhances the depth of flavor, so don’t skip it.
  • Feel free to use other cheeses like American or mozzarella if you prefer.
  • Toasting the buns after assembling adds a nice texture contrast but is optional.
  • Leftover mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
