4.8 from 92 reviews

A classic recipe for creamy, smooth mashed potatoes made with garlic, butter, whole milk, and optional sour cream, perfect as a comforting side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes and Garlic

  • 3 pounds potatoes (russet potatoes, Yukon Golds, or a mix, peeled and cut into large chunks)
  • 3 garlic cloves

Dairy and Seasonings

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick, plus more for serving)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1½ teaspoons sea salt (plus more for the cooking water)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ to ½ cup sour cream (optional)
  • Chopped fresh chives (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Boil Potatoes: Place the peeled and cut potatoes along with the garlic cloves in a large pot. Cover with cold water by about 1 inch and add a tablespoon of salt to the water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
  2. Cook Potatoes Until Tender: Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and gently boil for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain the potatoes and garlic thoroughly and return them to the pot.
  3. Mash and Mix Ingredients: Begin mashing the potatoes and garlic with a potato masher. When the mixture is partially mashed, add the butter, whole milk, sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Continue mashing until the potatoes reach your desired consistency, preferably smooth. Then gently fold in the sour cream, if using, with a spatula or wooden spoon.
  4. Season and Serve: Taste the mashed potatoes and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot, topped with additional butter and a sprinkle of chopped fresh chives for garnish.

Notes

  • Use a mix of russet and Yukon Gold potatoes for a buttery flavor and creamy texture.
  • Adding garlic to the boiling water infuses a subtle garlic flavor without overpowering the potatoes.
  • For extra richness, fold in sour cream at the end, but it is optional.
  • Be careful not to over-mash or use a food processor, as potatoes can turn gluey.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor, or keep warm in a covered dish.
