Ingredients

Scale

Slider Ingredients

  • 1 package King’s Hawaiian Original Sweet Rolls (12-count)
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 pound thinly-sliced deli ham (such as Black Forest)
  • 1/4 pound deli-sliced sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 pound deli-sliced Swiss cheese

Butter Glaze

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Pinch kosher salt (if needed)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dijon-Mayo Spread: In a small bowl, thoroughly stir together mayonnaise and 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard until well combined. Set this mixture aside for later use.
  2. Slice the Rolls: Using a serrated bread knife, carefully slice the King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls horizontally in half to separate the tops from the bottoms. Arrange the buns cut side up on a baking sheet.
  3. Broil the Rolls: Set your oven’s broiler to high and position the rack in the second slot down from the top, approximately 6 inches from the broiler element. Broil the cut sides of the rolls for 1-2 minutes until they are lightly toasted. Keep a close eye to prevent burning as broiling times can vary.
  4. Preheat Oven for Baking: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and position the rack in the middle of the oven. Lightly spray a glass or light-colored ceramic baking dish with cooking spray. If you use a pan with a darker interior, reduce the oven temperature to 325°F to avoid over-browning.
  5. Assemble Bottom Layer: Place the toasted bottom halves of the rolls in the prepared baking dish with the cut sides up. Spread just over half of the Dijon-mayo mixture evenly onto these rolls.
  6. Layer Cheese and Ham: Create the slider layers by adding sharp cheddar cheese first, then the sliced ham, followed by the Swiss cheese on top. Spread the remaining Dijon-mayo onto the toasted side of the tops of the rolls and place them on top to cover the cheese layer.
  7. Prepare and Apply Butter Glaze: In a small bowl, combine melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, poppy seeds, onion powder, and a pinch of kosher salt if desired. Pour this mixture over the assembled sliders and use a basting or pastry brush to distribute evenly over the tops and sides. It is fine if some butter pools around the sliders.
  8. Rest and Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and let it stand for 5 minutes at room temperature. Then bake covered in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, until the sliders are heated through and the cheese has melted.
  9. Bake Uncovered to Crisp: Remove the foil and continue baking the sliders uncovered for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the tops of the rolls are golden brown and crispy. Monitor closely to avoid burning.
  10. Serve: Allow the sliders to rest for a few minutes after baking. Cut between the rolls to separate and serve hot alongside potato chips, fries, or your favorite sandwich sides.

Notes

  • Watch the rolls closely while broiling as they can burn quickly.
  • If using dark-colored pans, reduce oven temperature to 325°F to prevent over-browning.
  • The Dijon-mayo spread can be adjusted to taste by using more or less Dijon mustard.
  • These sliders are best served warm and freshly baked for optimal melty cheese texture.
  • You can substitute ham with other deli meats like turkey or roast beef for variety.
