Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper

Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper, mixing just until incorporated to keep the patties tender.
  2. Shape & Rest: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Set them aside to rest while you prepare the gravy base.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet on the stovetop over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side until they develop a golden crust. Once browned, remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter and sauté the sliced onions until soft and translucent. Sprinkle in the flour and stir continuously for about 2 minutes to cook out the raw flavor. Gradually whisk in beef broth and heavy cream to form a smooth gravy. Add garlic powder and season to taste, cooking until slightly thickened.
  5. Bake Casserole: Nestle the browned patties into the creamy onion gravy in the skillet. Cover tightly with a lid or foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Then uncover and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy and deepen the flavors.
  6. Rest & Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes before serving. This helps the gravy to thicken further and enhances the overall taste.

Notes

  • Using an 80/20 ground beef blend ensures the patties remain juicy and flavorful.
  • You can use either plain or seasoned breadcrumbs based on your preference—seasoned will add extra flavor.
  • Be sure to brown the patties well to develop a rich, caramelized crust for better flavor.
  • This dish can be served with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
